Why three prices beat one

A single price puts the client in front of a binary: yes or no. And in that binary, “no” is the easy answer and “yes, but cheaper” is the negotiation you usually get instead. One price turns a sale into a standoff.

Three options change the question entirely. The client stops asking “should I buy this” and starts asking “which one should I buy.” That’s a far better question to have a client working on, because it assumes the purchase and moves the decision to the shape of it.

The structure I recommend has three tiers. Call them Essential, Signature, and Prestige. Present the most complete option, Prestige, first to set the anchor so that everything after it is compared to it. Most clients land on the middle tier, Signature, and that’s the compromise effect, the well-documented pull toward the middle option, doing its quiet work. Faced with three choices, people avoid the extremes and reach for the middle, which is exactly where you want a well-built middle option to be.

The tiers have to differ in scope and outcome, not how many hours you spend. This is the rule that makes the structure honest: you never lower a price without removing value. The Essential tier isn’t a discount on the same work. It’s a less comfortable journey to the destination, with a narrower scope and a more modest outcome. A cheaper tier that delivers the same thing for less money does only one thing: it tells the client your top number was padded, and it teaches them to push back on every number you quote in the future.

For the client, three real options restore a sense of control. They’re choosing rather than being sold to, and the version they pick feels like their decision. For you, the structure raises the average value of a project, ends the single-price standoff, and lets the client who genuinely wants more actually buy more instead of being capped by a single number.

Of the moves that make up value-based pricing, this is the most concrete and often the fastest to show a result.
